Whey Protein Hydrolysate

The most costly of the whey proteins to manufacture and the least used of the three, hydrolysate is predigested isolate. This is done through an enzyme process, breaking the isolates down into an even easier form to utilize. Hydrolysates have an extremely bitter taste that is difficult to cover up. With the taste and the high manufacturing cost, companies tend to not use this type of whey. Whey protein hydrolysate is also a fast-digesting protein. If you find a protein powder with whey protein hydrolysate as one of the primary ingredients (first or second), be prepared to pay significantly more for it.

It should be mentioned that digesting a protein too quickly can also lead to stomach and GI distress. While this doesn’t necessarily mean you have a cheaper grade of protein, it is still uncomfortable. You should always be aware of the primary protein to determine an overall quality of your supplement.
